Purpose

  • To manage, control and implement financial accounting policies, systems and procedures relating to revenue and expenditure.
  • The Financial Accountant is responsible for the preparation, processing and execution of financial accounting activities to ensure accurate, complete and timeous financial records.
  • A key focus of the role will be driving process improvements and operational efficiencies within the finance function.
  • This includes revenue and receivables management, expenditure and payables management, cash management, financial reporting, and people management.

Requirements
  • Relevant NQF 7 qualification – Bachelor’s degree in Finance with Accounting as a major.
  • Relevant NQF 8 qualification – Post graduate degree (BCom/Bcompt honours) (advantageous).
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a finance environment or completed SAICA/CIMA/ACCA articles.
  • Working knowledge of relevant Public Sector legislation, e.g. PFMA, National and Provincial Treasury Regulations.
  • Working knowledge of relevant industry legislation and regulations e.g. POPIA, PAJA, PAIA.
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting frameworks: International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) or Standards of Generally Recognised Accounting Practice (GRAP).
  • Strong understanding of and a strong commitment to good corporate governance - especially King IV.
  • High level of report writing skills and presentation skills.
  • Computer literate with advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong analytical capability with the ability to interpret data, identify trends and explain variances.
  • Valid driver’s licence.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare the full financial accounting cycle across revenue, receivables, expenditure and payables, ensuring accurate processing, allocations and reconciliations in line with approved policies and controls.
  • Prepare and process journals and adjustments, including accruals, corrections and reallocations, to ensure accurate and complete monthly and year-end financial records.
  • Deliver accurate and timely financial reporting inputs, including schedules and supporting information for monthly management accounts and reporting requirements.
  • Manage cash and banking activities, including preparation of cashbooks, bank reconciliations and engagement with banking institutions to resolve queries and support effective cash management.
  • Administer and control petty cash, ensuring compliance with internal controls.
  • Support audit readiness and compliance by preparing high-quality supporting documentation and audit files, and responding to audit queries in line with GRAP and governance requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and business units to resolve financial queries, improve data quality and ensure alignment between finance and operational activities.
  • Support the Head: Financial management in identifying opportunities to improve processes and controls within the financial accounting environment, contributing to a more efficient and reliable finance function.
  • Support and guide junior team members within the Financial Accounting section, ensuring quality outputs and contributing to a collaborative team environment.
