Purpose

  • Provide mechanical services to all diesel operated machinery, plant and equipment by repairing, maintaining, overhauling and improving its functionality to ensure that they are safe, reliable and available to operations to eliminate operations downtime.

Requirements
  • Demonstrated basic numeracy and literacy with 5 years relevant to the position applied for. OR
  • Grade 10 (NQF 2)
  • Must be a qualified trade tested Diesel Mechanical (Legislation pre-requisite).
  • Min 2 yearsโ€™ applicable experience.
  • Must be in possession of a valid code 08 driver's licence.
  • Must be prepared to travel. (Mostly serving the outlying Ports Depots i.e. Saldanha)
  • Must be prepared to work after hours and work shifts as per business' requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Examine, assess and conduct regular preventative maintenance on all diesel Machinery and equipment to ensure its reliability and maintain a high level of availability.
  • Examine, evaluate, monitor and report equipment for abuse and functionality whilst in operation to detect and identify early warning signals of potential damage in order to rectify problem and change behaviour before a major breakdown.
  • Plan and prepare apprentices for on-the-job training in order to train and develop them according to their development plan thereby ensuring skills are adequately transferred.
  • Respond, establish and repair fault for breakdown in the quickest possible time to minimize operation downtime.
  • Assess and ascertain size of repair work and spares specifications required in order to inform.
  • And follow-up with Supervisor for ordering of parts to plan for repair in shortest timeframe thereby making equipment available for operations.
  • Conduct full refurbishment of diesel engines.
  • Oversee installation, operation, maintenance, or repair to ensure that machines or equipment are installed and functioning according to specifications.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, or computer-generated reports.
  • Diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment.
  • Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics; completes machine shop operations; making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
  • Inspects, repairs, and maintains automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery, such as pumps and compressors.
  • Repairing and Maintaining Mechanical Equipment - Fixing, servicing, aligning, setting up, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of mechanical (not electronic) principles
