Purpose

  • The Operations Supervisor supports the Contract Manager in the day-to-day operational execution of a transport, mining, or agricultural logistics contract.
  • The role coordinates drivers, fleet readiness, shift activities, safety compliance, and customer service delivery to ensure seamless operational performance.
  • The Operations Supervisor is responsible for ensuring shift targets, fleet utilisation, documentation accuracy, and adherence to SOPs, SHEQ standards, and contractual requirements.
  • This role provides hands-on supervision and contributes to operational problem solving, efficiency improvements, and safe, cost-effective service deliveries of products/goods.

Requirements
  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • Diploma/Certificate in Transport, Logistics, Supply Chain, Production Management, or related field (advantageous)
  • Valid driver’s licence (Code EC); PrDP advantageous
  • 3–5 years’ experience in a transport, mining, agricultural, or industrial operations environment
  • 1–2 years’ experience in a supervisory or team-lead role
  • Exposure to fleet operations, scheduling, shift management, and driver coordination
  • Experience using TMS, tracking systems, Evolve, or similar platforms

Responsibilities

Operational Coordination

  • Execute daily operational plans and allocate resources according to schedules.
  • Conduct shift start-up checks, readiness assessments, and ensure accurate driver briefings.
  • Monitor live operations via TMS, tracking platforms, and communicate deviations to the Contract Manager.
  • Ensure on-time departures, correct routing, and effective management of standing time, delays, and alerts.
  • Support journey management, fatigue management, PPE adherence, pre-trips, and posttrip compliance.
  • Complete daily shift reports and escalate operational risks promptly.
  • Maintain operations continuity across rotating shifts, weekends, and night operations where applicable.

Fleet & Technical Support

  • Conduct daily inspections for fleet readiness (documentation, licensing validity, roadworthiness checks).
  • Report defects, breakdowns, and anomalies into Evolve or relevant systems.
  • Follow up on repairs, tyre changes, refuelling compliance, and maintenance-related actions.
  • Assist with monitoring fuel usage, kilometres, trip hours, and utilisation KPIs.
  • Ensure accurate fleet records, defect logs, and documentation are completed for each shift.

Driver & Staff Supervision

  • Supervise drivers, general workers, and admin staff during assigned shifts.
  • Enforce operational and safety procedures; ensure availability of PPE and adherence to standards.
  • Support the Contract Manager with performance tracking, attendance control, coaching, and basic IR processes.
  • Conduct driver debriefing (PODs, route challenges, delays, risks reported).
  • Identify skills gaps and recommend training or corrective actions.

Customer & Stakeholder Support

  • Engage with customer representatives on day-to-day operational matters.
  • Communicate delays, risks, delivery confirmations, and shift performance updates.
  • Support execution of customer requirements, site-specific protocols, and escalation processes.
  • Assist in implementing corrective actions for service-level deviations.

Safety, Compliance & SHEQ Duties

  • Enforce compliance with SHEQ policies, Road Transport Legislation, fatigue rules, PPE, and operational SOPs.
  • Conduct toolbox talks, safety briefings, and incident first-level reporting.
  • Participate in safety inspections, audits, and Drive Risk coaching sessions.
  • Ensure accurate completion of checklists, incident logs, near-miss reports, and compliance documentation.

Administrative & Systems Support

  • Ensure timely completion of trip sheets, PODs, fuel slips, and operational documentation.
  • Capture data into operational systems (TMS, Evolve, tracking portals, Uniflow or similar).
  • Support accurate daily/weekly reporting, including standing time, utilisation, fuel variance logs, and shift summaries.
  • Assist the Contract Manager with cost-control inputs and verifying operational expenses.

Facilities, Housekeeping & Site Control

  • Maintain site cleanliness, yard control, parking discipline, and compliance with customer site rules.
  • Support inspections of loading/offloading zones, equipment storage, and PPE distribution.
  • Escalate maintenance needs for yard, ablutions, offices, and equipment.
