Social Auxiliary Worker

Overview

TB HIV Care (THC), in existence since 1929, is an internationally recognised non-profit organisation. We provide health care services throughout South Africa to both the general population and communities at increased risk for HIV and TB, including adolescent girls and young women, sex workers and people who use drugs. Our work culture is adapted to the constantly-evolving South African health care environment and will suit solution-driven team players interested in opportunities for career development while working to connect people with care Purpose of the position: This post will provide psychosocial services under the supervision of a social worker within the context of an HIV Priority Populations Prevention programme focusing on adolescent girls and young women. This will include screening and assessment, and referral to social worker for therapeutic social work services, within the PPPrev Programme. The social auxiliary worker will also conduct structural programmes addressing HIV prevention and gender-based violence, as well as engage with relevant stakeholders within government departments, with partners and in the social work field. (This is a contract position renewable based on funding)

Responsibilities

• Conducts comprehensive psychosocial assessments (screening for gender-based violence, substance and alcohol abuse and mental health, vulnerability and risk assessments,) of AGYW and their families • Provide a minimum package of community-based care and refer to social worker /facility for continuum of care • Document victims of GBV in GBV register • Follow up on beneficiaries and provide psychosocial support • Provides referrals according AGYW needs using the resource directory • Provide appropriate interventions and/or feedback at the case management meeting on the needs arising • Ensures that families receive optimal care and holistic psychological support, etc. • Supports Social Workers in assessing the needs of AGYW and parent’s/care givers and guardians and implements effective support strategies • Records and maintains accurate and detailed patient information and interventions and keeps statistics in order to submit as required • Networks with all relevant stakeholders and implements an effective referral system to ensure effective service delivery • Assists with the identification of advocacy issues • Lobbies and advocates for patient’s needs • Attends training and workshops as part of staff development • Provides structural programmes including SASA • Educates patients and their families • Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings • Assist in implementation of support groups • Informs patients and their families on eligibility criteria for social support grants • Submits monthly reports to the supervisor

Requirements

• Grade 12 / matric or equivalent with a certificate in Social Auxiliary Work from a recognised college or institution • 2 years related experience and training • Registered with SACSSP (South African Council for Social Service Professions) • Proficiency in English & IsiZulu languages • Valid code 8 driver’s licence and own transport advantageous • Clear criminal record
