Laboratory Assistant (DTHF-099)

Purpose

• The DTHF’s Aerobiology Research Centre is seeking to appoint a suitably experienced person to the position of Laboratory Assistant.
• This is a laboratory-based position that supports the Aerobiology Research laboratories activities by performing laboratory maintenance, including general cleaning of the laboratories, cleaning and sterilisation of laboratory instruments and glassware, replenishing materials required for the laboratory's functions, waste management, monitoring the water purification and ice machines, and monitoring the laboratories consumable stock inventory.

Requirements

• Grade 12 or National Technical Certificate
• 2 years' experience working as a Laboratory Assistant

Skills & Competencies

• Basic Computer Literacy
• Ability to work within a team and independently
• Good organizational skills and ability to work efficiently
• Willingness to assist with ad hoc duties which arise from time to time

Advantageous:

• An understanding of laboratory health and safety practices and working with hazardous or infectious materials

Responsibilities

• Servicing and cleaning of laboratories to ensure uninterrupted and smooth functioning
• Monitor and execute laboratory waste disposal and servicing procedures in accordance with specific Health and Safety practices
• Preparation, cleaning and sterilization of glassware, instruments and reagents including operation, and monitoring the efficiency of sterilization equipment
• General laboratory maintenance including the monitoring of stock to ensure an adequate supply for optimal operation
• Ensure all SOPs are performed in accordance with the laboratory work code
• Administration – maintaining records as required.
